overloading

man its cold. man there's so much to do. man there's so little time. i'm somehow feeling more alive, motivated and stuff these days. not sure why, but won't question it. like i mentioned in the tagboard, i'm swamped with work. MSPowerpoint is like my bestfriend now. i much prefer doing computer project work tho, it's given me a lot of time to listen to tons of damien rice (i know of this site with streaming video of his amsterdam concert), pete teo and carpet ministry.

meanwhile, since updates will be sporadic, check out the vast [updated]  list of links i have. also, how come no one bloody comments on the pictures i put up in imagery? and as per usual, my tagboard's open for [ab]use. and chun kee, i know you like damien rice's cannonball, but don't go using up my host's bandwidth too much ya'hear.

oh, and fingers crossed, i'll be catching U2 in cardiff this june!
happy march guys.

the business of music

my university has tons of societies and clubs. these can be divided into athletic societies for every sport you can think of (even one involving frisbees), patriotic societies (one for each major country, and the Malaysian clubs here are one of the most active societies in the student union), political societies and career societies.

out of all these, my favourite is this interesting little society called the Music Business society. it was founded only in my second year here and although really quiet last year, it's quickly becoming more active, also, this year the president is a (very attractive) ex-asian pop-starlet.

i've been attending a few of the talks they've organised, listening to speakers like world famous DJ's, the president of BMI (an artiste representation company) and others. basically, i'm learning more about what it's like working within the music business (as opposed to being an artiste) and if you're interested, read my first draft of thisguy's take on the music industry

in other news, it's sad to see a million snowflakes die each day in vain, as they hurtle from the sky and nothing seems to happen next when it hits the ground and melts- no snow to play with at all. the dejavu flashbacks are still around and kat's away in singapore till saturday and more or less un-reachable by phone/internet.  : (

shifting clouds

in the span of 15 minutes the london sky has shifted from a cheerful blue to a dull grey. and it's actually snowing now. i'm just about to go for a 2 hour lecture and i doubt the snow will be there at the end of the lecture. oh well. i still love snowflakes.

wait. now the sky's back to blue again. and the snow's trickling off... wtf. what a rip off "snowstorm". london weather is crazy.

been sick over the weekend and have been having weird flashbacks throughout the day about home. it's weird. i'm not deliberately thinking about home and all, but i keep getting these random memories running in my mind for no apparent reason. it's as if my brain's spewing out random items from its cache folders. it can only be monday...

oh and check out the new button peek made for me- not quite what i had in mind, but an Excellent gift nonetheless.

the streets don't change, but maybe the names do

been having really vivid dreams of late. maybe due to the cold weather and dry air? one dream was about buying food for my parents and another was about updating this site. hmm.

thisguysplace musical recommendations of the month:

the streets : dry your eyes mate
it's chav to the max, low class british english, but the honesty in this song really proves universal themes transcend class and everything else. plus i have a weakness for strings...

the killers : somebody told me
i've got an english mate who HATES the band, but i can't seem to get tired of the hooks in this particular song. good stuff!
"breaking my back just to know your name, 17 tracks and i'm tired of this game / somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girl friend"

stereophonics : dakota
it's STEREOPHONICS what else do you want to know?

and the band to keep an eyebrow arched for :

fightstar
the first single from the band with Busted's ex-guitarist (insert cringe here) is amazingly called Palahniuk's Laughter. what's an ex boyband member's new band doing writing a song about FightClub's author? could they actually have some credibility? i've heard the single and it's a close Muse-ish ripoff but on the whole, not too bad. what's next? victoria beckham writing a song about emily dickinson?

blue boxers day

i spoke to my godmother last night. she was updating me on how busy she is these days. she's always been like that. immaculately clean and tidy and taking care of her godchildren and family. nowadays she has to get up early and plan what to cook for my godfather who's experiencing bad appetite problems. she has to make lots of fruit juices for him to keep his temperature down because of the treatment he's undergoing.

on the whole they sound good. my godfather wasn't in, so i texted him to remind him that today was valentines day. and i don't think i've ever heard of them celebrating the occasion. but he replied and said he'll "attend to it".

it IS just another day, but i think it's important to have days marked out like this to look back on and know  that you were in love and had *something special*.

today i play cupid. well sort of anyway. it's a cupid exchange program of sorts. speaking of which, thisguysplace has a new linkee - huiyi who owns a blog, writes in it but still won't admit she's a blogger. and check out that blog title!

btw. just a random plug- things to do in denver when you're dead is the bomb! it's a classic guy movie. how come it's gary felder's only good movie?

non event of the year

sigh. the chain of non-events - no angpaus mean no incentive to gamble, drink etc. no blasting of stupid chinese new year jingles etc. most of my relatives here aren't really much in the mood either. we did have steamboat tho. which was especially nice in the cold weather. at the table last night were a whole bunch of malaysian expats. i thought my being away from cny celebrations for 3 years was bad enough, some of them have spent decades (non)celebrating it overseas. what's the point?

my parents were complaining of the quietness too. it was cool when we were in college and would drive to friend's houses, playing game after game of cards, gorging on snacks, drinks and getting paid to do it. man. and they say babylon's in london. if they only knew.

conflicts of interest

i'm hurtling fast towards the rat race with each month that passes me by and graduation looming. all my childhood dreams coming crashing down.

things i've resigned myself to accept:

-i won't be that teenage rock sensation and open for U2
-i won't be a samurai in training
-i did not write a critically acclaimed novel cum screenplay while in university
-i did not build a successful independent company and drop out of uni
-i did not get recruited by the CIA (...or did i?)
-i did not stumble upon a secret dimension that would take me back to B.C.

instead, all i can look forward to is getting in line, going for interview after interview, jumping through the hoops and wagging my tail as hard as i can when i'm offered the proverbial employment bone. essentially, all i'll be is a corporate whore, prostituting my "skills" and youth away for the highest bidder. i'll strip myself of everything that makes me an individual, put a barcode on my forehead and assume the position in an aesthetically homogeneous cubicle.

all for the sake of a stable source of income and debt financing. however, these are some of the reasons why i (naively) look forward to being a yuppy:

# so i can afford subscriptions to yuppy mags like Time and TheEconomist and maybe throw in RollingStone magazine and FHM (UK) as well (Malaysia's lame ass editions piss me off)

# so i can get a sweet little vintage car (with a cd player with woofers and air-conditioning and *coff* automatic transmission)

# so i can start a collection of ties (as much as i hate the fact that i'm like a pet with a colar, i really do like wearing ties, for some reason...)

# so i can sit in a coffee place with a laptop and not seem like a total ah beng

# so when i'm 40 something and doing things like painting and writing music, i can say i'm a reformed yuppy instead of being just another hippy who missed his ticket to woodstock.

toilet graffitti

up in the world's best library for the social sciences, probably used by Nobel Prize winner George Bernard Shaw and equipped with the latest online library catalogue interfaces, you'll also find some of the most interesting toilet graffitti. it's not your usual kindergarten-ish drawings of penises and vaginas and "for a good time, call sofie at 555-######".

what exactly do some of the best (male) minds in the world think about while they take a crap in the little third floor  toilet cubicle ? religious and racial prejudice dominates the "discussion threads" but here're some of the gems i thought you guys/girls might've liked to see.

(most probably) in reference to LSE's policy of charging foreign students about 10 times the local students' tuition fees

"where's all the LSE pussy?" - "certainly not here" - " in the other toilet dumbass!"

and then there's one written by several different people that goes -

"God is dead" - Nietzshe

     "Nietzshe is dead" - God

                "Fred is dead" - Me

"My dick is dead" - Joe

don't ask me how i got away with taking pictures in the loo. the lengths i go to to entertain you guys... so what did i contribute to this wall of mirth? - i wrote - -"this is a nice toilet"  :D

purification

thisguysplace is OFFICIALLY ONE YEAR OLD! check out the first entries here.

after the big postal mix-up, i finally got the Simon&Garfunkel Reunion disc set. The DVD and double disc set rawks! (thanks again jacq- want a copy?) and after listening to their music since i was in the womb, only now can i say i know which is simon and which is garfunkel. it'll make a cool father's day gift as well.

*** loads of new images are up at the imagery section. ***

i keep glancing at the calendar and i'm getting worked up just thinking about the summer term exams and how prepared i want to be this year. my list of project work keeps growing. small little nuisance projects, some of which don't even count.

enough work whinging, i'd been toying with the idea for a long time, and it wasn't an easy thing for me to do, but tonight, for the first time ever, i (close) shaved my head. i feel free. i feel purified. you might think it's just a superficial thing, but try it and it's far more spiritual than it seems, especially if you do it yourself (and get a little help from your faithful ecuadorian buddy).
